MORE than a week after the worst earthquake in three decades hit China, thousands of soldiers, aid workers and volunteers are still flooding into the disaster areas. Even though hope for finding more survivors has dimmed, people are not giving up. Millions of wounded and homeless residents are still in dire need of help.
Love, compassion and charity have swept across the nation, prompting millions of ordinary Chinese to donate money, blood and all sorts of relief materials for quake victims.
Volunteers are playing a very important role in helping these victims. Many have left their jobs and studies to travel to Sichuan. We are especially proud and moved to learn that hundreds of college graduates and young people, many of them our readers, are joining the voluntary campaign.
We'd like to thank them all for their selfless contribution, and we wish them the best of luck. At the same time, we'd like to ask other college students and young volunteers to study the situation carefully before setting off for Sichuan. Please make sure you are well-prepared, and that you can make a positive contribution to the relief effort.
The work of the young volunteers is of great value. But it also true that digging survivors from the rubble, dressing their wounds and giving them food is just the first step in helping them rebuild their lives.
There still remain many things to be done: from burying the dead and comforting the surviving to rebuilding roads, bridges, schools, houses, to rejuvenating local economies. These tasks will have to be tackled by professionals who will need all the help they can get.
Shocked by the sudden tragedy and driven by their kind hearts, many young people have rushed to contribute to disaster relief efforts. Donating a week's allowance or giving blood are both kind deeds. We have nothing but admiration for such selflessness. But there is more that can be done.
For example, some of you may want to consider becoming a pen-pal with the children in the devastated areas, encouraging them so that they can regain confidence for the future. Perhaps, when the new semester starts, some of your schools may welcome students from areas hit by the tragedy. Maybe you can help them settle into campus life. Thinking ahead, when you graduate, you may want to work in Sichuan as a teacher, engineer or doctor.
Emotions are running high across the nation. We need to channel these emotions into continued constructive efforts in the months and years to come.
