Headlines about Somali Pirates
November 14, 2008: A Chinese fishing vessel was hijacked by pirates armed with grenade (手榴弹) launchers and automatic weapons.
November 25, 2008: Somali pirates hijack another ship, drop ransom (赎金) for Saudi tanker.
April 4: Taiwanese ship, Win Far 161, was seized near the Seychelles islands, with a crew of 30, including 17 Filipinos, six Indonesians, five Chinese and two Taiwanese.
April 4: Somali pirates hijacked a British cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden, the fifth vessel to be seized in a surge of attacks in less than 48 hours.
April 6: Somali pirates have seized a 32,000-tonne UK-owned, Italian-operated bulk carrier early this morning.
April 8: Pirates near Somalia’s coastline attacked a cargo ship Wednesday with a crew of at least 20 U.S. nationals.
Captain Richard Phillips, the captain of the cargo ship, was taken hostage by the pirates when they seized his ship.

II. Skimming
Captain Phillips is a hero, having offered himself up as a hostage to the pirates to save the crew.
Is he still being held by the pirates as a hostage now?
Who saved him?
Is the rescue successful?
He is safe now.
U.S. Navy SEAL snipers freed him by killing three Somali pirates.

III. Scanning
Fill in the blanks.
1. The rescue is impressive.
The three snipers had made some of the most difficult shots imaginable: shooting at the same time 75 feet away from the swaying deck of a warship at three moving human targets in a lifeboat on the ocean. It had to be a “head shot”, too. Because one of the pirates was holding a gun pointed at Phillips. Only a head shot could make sure that the gunman wouldn’t shoot the gun by accident.
2. The cost of training US Navy Seals is very high, but they are worth every penny.
Just 2,000 SEALs are highly trained as rescuers and killers, who can fight by sea, air and land.
The training of a SEAL can take years: eight weeks of Navy basic training, six months of basic SEAL training and another six months of SEAL qualification training, in which advanced skills are taught.
Only about a third of the trainees complete the course -- and even then there’s another 18 months of training before they can be sent into a mission.
To train just one SEAL is expected to cost between $350,000 to $500,000. But one can’t really put a price on what they do. Any type of mission, anywhere in the world, they’re called to get a handle on it.
